Most TikTok creators in East Africa use hashtags the way they used them on Instagram in 2019 , stuffing 20+ popular tags hoping one of them catches. That approach does not work on TikTok in 2026. The algorithm has evolved. Hashtags now serve a completely different purpose, and using them wrong can actually hurt your reach.
I analyzed over 500 viral TikTok videos from East African creators , videos that got 100K+ views from Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania. Here is what the data revealed about how hashtags actually work.
The viral videos in my analysis used an average of 3-5 hashtags. Not 10. Not 20. Three to five. Videos with more than 7 hashtags actually performed worse on average than videos with 3-5. TikTok\'s algorithm appears to penalize "hashtag stuffing" , it reads as spammy behavior.
1. The Niche Hashtag (1-2 tags): This tells TikTok exactly what your content is about. Instead of #fyp (which is useless), use specific tags like #UgandanFood, #KampalaLife, #EastAfricanFashion. These have fewer posts, which means less competition and a better chance of being discovered by the right audience.
2. The Location Hashtag (1 tag): TikTok\'s geo-targeting is improving. Adding a location-relevant hashtag like #Uganda, #Kampala, #Nairobi, or #DarEsSalaam helps the algorithm serve your content to local audiences first. Local audiences engage more (they relate to the content), which signals quality to the algorithm, which triggers broader distribution.
3. The Trending/Community Hashtag (1-2 tags): If there is a relevant trending hashtag in your region, use it. But ONLY if it is genuinely relevant. The algorithm is smart enough to detect when you are using a trending sound or hashtag just for reach without content that matches.
Spend 15 minutes per week on hashtag research. Search your topic on TikTok. Look at the top-performing videos. Note which hashtags they used. Then click those hashtags and look at the view counts of recent posts. A good hashtag has consistent views across recent posts , meaning people actually browse it. A bad hashtag has one viral video from 2023 and nothing else.
Hashtags alone will not make you go viral. But using them strategically , combined with great content and engagement signals from TFAST HUB , significantly increases your chances. For deeper TikTok strategy, read: How the TikTok Algorithm Actually Works.
